What is stroke (Brain Attack)?

A Stroke occurs due to damage to the brain because of decrease in blood supply to Brain caused by a blockage in the blood vessel feeding the Brain. Sometimes it occurs when a blood vessel bursts, leading to bleeding in the brain.

What are the symptoms?

Brain attack symptoms are:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, leg (especially on one side of the body)
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no cause

What are the risk factors of Stroke (Brain attack)?

Old age, family history of Stroke and Heart disease, high Blood Pressure, Heart diseases, Carotid Artery disease, high Cholesterol level, smoking, Diabetes, obesity and physical inactivity are major risk factors for the stroke. By controlling them one may reduce risk of stroke.

Case Study

A 61 year old gentleman presented to medical trust hospital with paralysis of left side of body since 3 hours. Immediate CT Scan was done, which showed clot inside big blood vessel of Brain. He was given clot dissolving injection (Alteplase) and taken into Cath Lab for clot removal. Within 1.5 hours to hospital presentation, his clot was removed. Over a period of three days, his paralysis almost completely recovered.
